Because of its unique almond-shaped cross-section, each bell produces two distinct tones — one struck at the center, one at the side — a third apart. A full Marquis Yi set spans from C2 to D7 and can play all twelve semitones in its middle range.
Achieving this in a new casting demands precise wall geometry and careful acoustic tuning. It is the hardest thing to do in bronze — and the clearest proof of a foundry's skill.
We cast in 88% bronze (third-party lab report available) — the alloy that gives the bells their tone and lets them ring true for centuries — and we tune every bell to pitch. We never sell resin, plated or decorative bells as playable instruments.

The Marquis Yi bianzhong was unearthed in 1978 in Suizhou, Hubei — the same province where our foundry has worked for over 50 years. We know this instrument not as a foreign curiosity, but as local heritage.
