Prominently situated within the central corridor of the park, these installations are strategically positioned near the monumental ensembles Yinglong Charting the Rivers and Passing the Home Three Times Without Entering. The site offers a commanding view directly overlooking the Yangtze River, while being backdropped by the historic Qingchuan Pavilion and the Palace of Yu and Ji. As a primary cultural anchor, it remains a defining component of Wuhan’s premier mythological landmark.
Officially commissioned and opened to the public in 2006, the park features a prestigious collection of 14 flagship sculptural ensembles. This extensive series serves as a comprehensive artistic chronicle centered on the legendary epic: The Great Yu’s Mastery of the Ancient Floods.
Character Development
Great Yu is rendered with a robust and upright physique—characterized by broad shoulders and a square, stable frame—embodying the steadfastness, perseverance, and stoicism of a legendary leader. His rugged facial features are masterfully balanced by a gentle, almost shy expression; as he transitions from the battlefield of flood control, a newfound tenderness emerges. Clad in ancient homespun robes with hair traditionally bound, his slightly introverted posture—with his hand reservedly held by Nüjiao—perfectly captures the character of a hero dedicated to the state, unaccustomed to the nuances of romance.
Nüjiao is depicted with slender elegance and a modest, gentle grace. Leaning slightly forward, she reaches out to take Yu’s hand, a gesture that beautifully balances youthful shyness with bold admiration. The sculptural rendering of her drapery features fluid, ethereal lines; the folds fall naturally with the body’s motion and billow in the wind, eliminating any sense of industrial stiffness and enhancing her feminine vitality. Her delicate facial features, affectionate gaze, and the subtle lift of her lips capture the pure sweetness of love at first sight.
The composition centers on the tactile connection of their joined hands and a shared, lingering gaze—a silent dialogue that transcends words. The moderate spacing between the figures creates an intimacy that is dignified rather than ostentatious, strictly adhering to ancient etiquette and the cultural preference for reserved emotional expression. The figures are executed with anatomical precision, striking a masterful balance between mythological aura and lifelike realism.
Material Specifications
uperior Environmental Resilience:
Bronze is the premier medium for monumental outdoor installations. Specifically selected for its ability to thrive in high-humidity riparian (riverfront) environments, it offers exceptional resistance to intense UV radiation, heavy precipitation, weathering, and oxidation. This ensures long-term dimensional stability and permanent preservation without the risk of structural decay.
Artistic Patination & Chromatic Depth:
The sculpture features a sophisticated deep-toned antique bronze patina, complemented by selective hand-buffed highlights. By leveraging the natural luster of the bronze, we differentiate the visual textures of the human anatomy, the fluid drapery, and the intricate fox tail. This multi-layered finish evokes a sense of historical gravitas, perfectly capturing the primal atmosphere of ancient legends.
Architectural Support & Material Interplay:
The piece is anchored to a monolithic granite pedestal, providing a sturdy and stable architectural foundation. The use of natural stone creates a compelling material interplay—contrasting the “warmth” of the bronze with the “coolness” of the granite—while simultaneously serving critical load-bearing, stabilizing, and moisture-barrier functions.
The cornerstone installations of the Wuhan Great Yu Mythology Park comprise a curated collection of monumental masterpieces, including Great Yu Inspecting the Nine Tripods by Chariot, Slaying Xiangliu, Yinglong Charting the Rivers, The Nine-Tailed Fox Acting as Matchmaker, The Admonition Drum, and The Mighty Deluge. Masterfully orchestrated to create a harmonic visual dialogue, these sculptures provide a comprehensive artistic realization of the epic theme: “The Unification of the Nine Provinces.”
